GENESIS 19

‘ At first, Lot just stood there. But the Lord wanted to save him. So the angels took Lot, his wife, and his two daughters by the hand and led them out of the city. ‘

Genesis 19:16 CEV

God could’ve destroyed the city of Sodom with no word to Lot or Abraham (Gen 18:4), BUT because of His mercy, God’s angels grabbed Lot and his family and brought them forcibly to safety.

It is believed that the city of Sodom and Gomorrah is near the Dead Sea where there are numerous rock salt formation including pillars about the size of a humans… There’s a mountain called Mount Sodom that is almost entirely composed of halite – also known as rock salt.

‘But Lot’s wife looked back and turned into a pillar of salt.’

Genesis 19:26, MSG

From my perspective, the fact that there’s a whole mountain made of salt means that those in Sodom also became salt just as Lot’s wife did. It is also a parallel that when God rescues us from something, we shouldn’t look back to what He rescued us from for we would do ourselves more harm than good.

‘But Lot’s wife looked back and turned into a pillar of salt. One day the older daughter said to the younger, “Our father is getting old and there’s not a man left in the country by whom we can get pregnant. Let’s get our father drunk with wine and lie with him. We’ll get children through our father—it’s our only chance to keep our family alive.” One day the older daughter said to the younger, “Our father is getting old and there’s not a man left in the country by whom we can get pregnant. Let’s get our father drunk with wine and lie with him. We’ll get children through our father—it’s our only chance to keep our family alive.”’

Genesis 19:26, 31-32

The shameful act of incest committed by Lot’s daughters gave birth to two sons whose descendants would greatly trouble Israel.

  1. Moab: son of the older daughter, father of the Moabites; means “from father”.
  2. Ben-Ammi: son of the younger daughter, father of the Ammonites. means “son of my kinsman”.

When we do acts that go against God, we create for ourselves thorns on our sides that will attempt to keep us away from God’s will… but, if we remain in Him, no weapon formed against us will prosper.
