Genesis 10 is labeled the Table of Nations because it’s an account of the descendants of Noah, from whom came all nations after the flood.
Today, I will dive into a few that drew my attention.
- Javan – son of Japheth, son of Noah. (Genesis 10:4)
Javan is also an ancient name for the Greek people.
“It is thought that many of Japhet’s descendants migrated to Europe.” (NIV Starting Place Study Bible, Zondervan, 2019)
2. Tarshish – son of Javan, son of Japheth, son of Noah (Genesis 10:4b)
Tarshish becomes the name of the place Jonah heads to when the Lord tells him to go to Nineveh (Jonah 1:3). In the CEV translation, Tarshish is translated to be Spain.
3. Cush – son of Ham, son of Noah (Genesis 10:6)
In the CEV translation, Cush is named Ethiopia because the Hebrew text has “Cush” in Genesis 2:13, which was a region south of Egypt, that includes the present countries of Ethiopia and Sudan.
4. Nimrod – son of Cush, son of Ham, son of Noah (Genesis 10:8)
Nimrod was the first heroic warrior on earth. He built his own kindom in the land of Babylonia and expanded into Assyria.
Nimrod built the city of Nineveh, Rehoboth Ir, Calah and Resen.
4. Egypt/Mizram – son of Ham, son of Noah (Genesis 10:6)
Mizraim [from whom descended the Egyptians]Genesis 10:6 AMP
The Philistines came from the Caphorites who are descendants of Mizaraim. (Genesis 10:13)
5. Canaan – son of Ham, son of Noah (Genesis 10:6)
Canaan was the ancestor of (just to name a few) the Hittites, the Amorites, and Jebusites (Verses 15-16), these would later go on to become Israel’s enemies.
6. Shem – son of Noah (Genesis 10:1)
Shem was Noah’s oldest son and the one from whose line the Israelites come.
Shem was the ancestor of all the sons of Eber.Genesis 10:21b NIV
7. Eber – son of Shelah, son of Arphaxad, son of Shem (Genesis 10:24)
The name Eber gives rise to the term Hebrew.
Abram was a direct descendant of Eber, but we will get further into this in Chapter 11.
Although not every ancient people group is listen in this “Table of Nations” its clear teaching is that all the varied peoples of the earth, no matter of what land or language are descended from Noah.NIV Starting Place Study Bible, Zondervan, 2019
